5 Reasons Why The Mummy Failed At The Indian Box Office

5 Reasons why Tom Cruise's The Mummy couldn't do well in India

This article gives brief insight about the reasons why The Mummy failed in India

The Mummy was one of the anticipated movies of the summer. Not only the Tom Cruise starrer was a reboot of the mega successful trilogy of Brendan Fraser, it was also the first entry into the monsters universe of Universal.Unfortunately, the film performed badly at US box office while the worldwide figures are also spectacular. One of the countries where it was expected to do well was India as original trilogy is a big hit on television and had several repeat telecasts in all these years. However, the film tumbled here also.Let’s have a look at the 5 reasons why The Mummy failed at Indian box office.

1.

Brand has more value than star in India – As far as Hollywood movies go, the brand is the ultimate crowd puller in India.Stars like Johnny Depp and Robert Downey Jr.are well known here but they don’t have the power to open a movie unless they are in the form of Jack Sparrow and Ironman resp.Earlier this year Vin Diesel couldn’t save XXX:Return of Xander Cage from flopping even with Deepika Padukone while just 3 months later Furious 8 was a big hit.Similarly Tom Cruise is worthy only when he is starring in Mission Impossible franchise. His name on The Mummy poster hardly elicited any excitement about the movie in India

2.Where is Egypt in the movie – One of the reasons behind the success of original 2 films in India was their whole setting in and around Egypt. Most of the people connect Egypt with mummies & pyramids here. The reboot set in the modern time missed that connection. Most of the movie is set around London and it robs the film of that thrill & awe that made the original set in Egypt so wonderful.

3.Nothing novel in the visuals department – Indians love disaster porn and it was evident from the success of 2012 which had no stars & no branding at all.If pitched correctly, the films with visually dazzling sequences tend to do well (one reason why most of the superhero films do well). However, The Mummy didn’t have that much to offer in terms of visual treat.Even that sandstorm scene didn’t make any impression though a similar scene 16 years back was a moneyshot.

4.Terrible reviews – Most of the people watching Hollywood films are educated and are in touch with the latest news from around the globe. The terrible reviews in the west had already suggested that movie wasn’t good.Once the local reviews started dropping in and it was clear that the film is actually bad, the multiplex audience, who would have given the collections of the film some impetus on weekend, dropped the plan to watch the film.

5.‘A’ certificate from censor board – The final nail in the coffin was the adult certificate given by the Indian censor board. In the hindsight, the movie being so terrible, it didn’t create that much dent in the collection. But since the summer vacations were on and there were few such films in the marketplace, family audience would have lifted the weekend figures a bit and made the collections a bit more respectable.
