For the modern movie viewers, IMDB is a quick source to ascertain whether a movie is worth watching or not. Slowly and steadily the site has gained prominence in India as well as the film lovers are quick to rate an anticipated film on IMDB after its release. However, not every movie rated high by the users actually end up doing well at the box office. There may be a no of reasons behind it, but the truth is movie business is still very unpredictable and in spite doing good work in front and the back of the camera & earning
plaudits from critics & netizens, the general moviegoing populace may still reject your film. Here are 5 such Bollywood films that underwhelmed at the box office even though there IMDB ratings suggest otherwise. I have only considered films released after 2010 which had a wide release and had at least 5000 votes at the time of writing this article.1. Drishyam - The remake of 2013 Malyalam sensation was an highly anticipated movie in 2015 as two popular stars in the form of Ajay Devgn and Tabu were there in the lead. The film score well with critics and scored high IMDB rating. However the film couldn't set the box office on fire and turned out to be a below average fare. Some blamed it on marketing which couldn't sell the film effectively, but in the end it didn't matter. The film holds a rating of 8.4 as of today
2. Fan - The Shahrukh Khan starrer was an ambitious project for the star as well as makers as the whole movie relied on the charisma of Khan at the box office. The film lacked the masala elements often associated with Shahrukh films like good music, but the trailer was well liked and the film had a good begnning too. But the film soo ran out of gas after first weekend and the second week sealed it's fate. Current IMDB rating of the film stands at 7.3
3. Madaari - Irrfan Khan
had scored a sleeper hit with Talwar in 2015 which was more of arthouse kind of film. So expectations were high from this movie which had a higher budget and a well received trailer. Things, though didn't turn out that well at the box office as Indian public outright rejected the film. The film didn't open well and couldn't sustain thereafter. Fortunately, his 2017 release Hindi Medium didn't suffer the same fate. Even more than a year after the release, Madaari holds a rating of 7.64. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! - Byomkesh Bakshy is a well known literary character in India thanks to the popular television series that aired in 90s. When the movie was announced by Yashraj films, a bigwig of Bollywood, there were talks about how the film will fare at the box office. The movie came and sank without notice. It didn't help that the movie was released with Hollywood biggie Furious 7. At the time of writing this article, the film had an IMDB score of 7.7
5. Gangs of Wasseypur I & II - Technically it is one film like Kill Bill, but due to the length of entire movie, it was relased in 2 parts. Both parts, directed by Anurag Kashyap, are considered to be the best Bollywood films of this decade. The songs and dialogues of the movie are still in vogue on social media even though the films were released 5 years back. In spite becoming a part of pop culture, both parts didn't do that well at the box office. Of course, the violence and profanities didn't help the film as that family audience stayed away, but the budget of the film was not that high that it needed big recoveries. The film is still a huge hit with the netizens as its current rating on IMDB is 8.3
